There are various Motivation theories formulated by the psychologist based on human behavior performing at the different time and different place, two popular motivation theories which is applicable in workplace are :-
Maslow’s Heirarchy of Needs

Maslow‘s motivation theory is the most influential theory in the workplace, he represented his theory as a heirarchical trianglewhich shows lower basic needs to higher level needs, Maslowsuggested that if a person met the basic needs for food and water then the next focus will be on the need to be safe and security. After that need of social belongings, and so on.
The Maslow motivation theory is represented by following 5 steps:
- Psychological needs: These are basically daily needs food, water and sleep.
- Safety needs: security, free from pain and danger.
- Social needs: It is related to belongings, relationships, social meets and friendships.
- Esteem needs: This is all about self appreciation and self-respect and satisfaction.
- Self-Actualization: Realize your full potential and applying your full efforts to become everything.

In the workplace if a person is working and getting only basic needs he/she will no longer motivated until by getting job security and a high pay scale that’s how this heirachy need theory works.
Frederick Herzberg’s Motivating and Hygiene Factor Theory
Frederick Herzberg describes two factors Motivating factor(motivators) and Hygiene factor, that show satisfaction and dissatisfaction at work. Generally motivating factors are not much effective as compared to the hygiene factors people feel unsatisfied without hygiene factors, it is needed to be resolve hygiene factor first before motivating factors becomes more effective.
Some examples of hygiene factors at work place are:
- Company policies
- Supervision
- Company car
- Physical work environment
- Relationship with co-workers
- Salary
- Job security
- Status
